Research licensing, consent and data protection in Kenya
NACOSTI licensing: NACOSTI's current FAQ states that all persons intending to undertake research in Kenya are required to apply for a Research Licence, including researchers working through private organisations, NGOs, government agencies and research institutions. Where a survey assignment constitutes research within that regime, the licensing position should be resolved before fieldwork begins.
NACOSTI states that research-licence applications are made online, non-Kenyan researchers require affiliation with a relevant local institution, a licence is valid for one year, and complete satisfactory applications should be processed within 30 days. NACOSTI also announced revised research-licensing fees effective 1 October 2026; use the current official fee schedule rather than older figures.
Ethics and other approvals: A research licence does not replace ethical approval, institutional permission, sector-specific approvals or site access requirements. Research involving human participants, personal information or sensitive issues may require ethics review and additional safeguards.
